Girls Appreciation Night at UBC

Given to me by James, a fourth year UBC guy

"Girls appreciation night actually took over a month to plan. The idea was floating around even during winter conference. At first, Sam Chua and I simply wanted to encourage the girls in their faith, but it turned out to be so much more. Not only did it become an outreach opportunity for the girls to invite their non-Christian friends, but it got the boys/men (haha, yea... there is a distinction, but we are aiming to building all of them into men of God :P ) united.

The preparation was intense. We wanted to completely surprise the girls and give them an unforgettable evening, especially if it's a chance to witness to non-believers. For the food, it was crazy, I was the head in the kitchen and cooking for 40-50 girls is not easy, lots of yelling at my fellow brothers (with the purest intention of simply wanting to perfect both the dishes which were curry chicken and satay beef). The amazing thing was that the guys actually cooperated! Even some of the ones that can sometimes "clash" actually were at peace with each other probably because we had a mission, to please God by encouraging the girls with this wonderful night. In fact, prior to the night of, we had stayed up all night making these origami stars for the girls (around 50 to a jar, nicely designed by Ian Li and Toby Lam. They even had themes for each jar, some looked like automn, another bubble gum. Haha).

The video was about what would happen to guys if there were no women. It was a mix of both guys' humour ended with a touchy, mushy conclusion haha. Decor was intense, a lot of guys put in a lot of hard work. Games, music (that's another thing that the girls really appreciated.

We had some really talented musicians; Seth Tee, Juan Herrera, Ricky Pa. ) Seeing the responses of the girls both on the night of and afterward, I think it was worth it. Most if not all the girls felt purposeful. Our reward was the "awws' " of the girls and the "well-done-good-and-faithful-servant" I think we got from our Lord.

There was unity, purpose, perseverance (no joke, not sleeping and making origami stars all night can drive a guy crazy) and brotherly love. For the girls, I think they all felt something special; even some of the ones that weren't a part of our ministry."
