Martha, Martha, Martha

Today during our staff prayer meeting at UBC, we looked at Luke's story of Mary and Martha. Part of me can't help feeling badly for Martha--always portrayed as the sister in need of a smack down. Perhaps it's because I sympathize strongly with her desire to impress Jesus with her hard work and excellence. Similarly, I bring to God a basket of my achievements and efforts...so much so that when I'm weak and failing I think He'll love me less.

And that's the beauty of it: God neither loves me more nor less based on my efforts to please Him. That's what it means to be saved by grace! And so, I am free to serve Him or sit as His feet. (sigh of relief)
