Thanks to my Papa, the research master, for sending me this sad but important article on the advertising push of pornography on cable TV.
Motivated by greed (and what else could motivate such an industry?!), the push is a result of loss of profits.
"Pay-per-view porn is being slowly nibbled to death by more cheaply-priced (or free) internet smut, while adult studios are suffering from stalled DVD sales.
"Five years ago, 90% of our business was DVD," said Mr. Joone, "This year it will probably be less than 60%."
While my heart bleeds for the loss of profits of the "Adult industry" (although i question the nomenclature of an industry that feeds on lack of self control, misdirected desires and deceit referring to themselves and their audience as "adult") I would like to point out that we are in a recession and perhaps we should have other concerns. Perhaps American men (and women) should be spending their precious pennies elsewhere?!
"But a 2007 Kagan Research report found that adult video on-demand and pay-per-view is expected to make up a $1.4 billion market by 2014..."
"We're coming out of an eight-year political administration that was very tough on the adult business. What is driving cable operators now is money, not fear. They're starting to not really care what people say; they're looking at their bottom line."
Should our children, families, and ourselves be subject to such advertising? The average age of exposure to pornography is 11 years old. Before puberty, while one is still young enough to get a kids meal at Denny's, pornography comes knocking. When will it be enough? When will the commercialization of lust cripple our culture and morality? Are we becoming a Porn Nation?
